Introducing H-Wave electrotherapy

Updated: Apr 13

Expanding treatment options for equine patients

We are pleased to announce the addition of H-Wave electrotherapy to our clinical toolkit, further enhancing the range of evidence-informed modalities available to support equine performance, rehabilitation, and long-term musculoskeletal health.

What is H-Wave therapy?

H-Wave therapy is a specialised form of electrotherapy designed to stimulate muscle and soft tissue using distinct low- and high-frequency waveforms. Unlike conventional neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) or TENS, H-Wave is engineered to produce:

  • Non-fatiguing muscle contractions at low frequency

  • Enhanced microcirculation and lymphatic flow

  • Analgesic effects through modulation of nerve signalling at higher frequencies

This combination allows for therapeutic input without contributing to further tissue fatigue - particularly relevant in equine athletes or those undergoing rehabilitation.

Potential clinical applications in equine practice

H-Wave therapy is not a standalone treatment but can be integrated within a structured veterinary physiotherapy programme. Its applications may include:

1. Soft tissue injury and rehabilitation

  • Muscle strain or fibre disruption

  • Post-operative rehabilitation

The therapy may support tissue healing through improved circulation and oedema reduction, while maintaining gentle neuromuscular activation.

2. Management of pain and muscle dysfunction

  • Compensatory muscle tension

  • Chronic back or pelvic discomfort

  • Myofascial pain syndromes

Higher frequency settings may assist in modulating pain perception, improving comfort and facilitating more effective manual therapy and exercise progression.

3. Performance support and recovery

  • Post-exercise recovery in competition horses

  • Management of muscle fatigue or stiffness

  • Maintenance in high-performance equine athletes

The non-fatiguing nature of H-Wave makes it particularly suited for use alongside training schedules without adding physiological load.

Practical considerations

  • Non-invasive and well tolerated by most horses

  • Typically used as part of a multimodal treatment plan, alongside manual therapies, exercise prescription and veterinary oversight

  • Individual protocols are tailored based on clinical presentation, stage of healing and performance demands

A measured, evidence-informed approach

While H-Wave therapy has demonstrated promising mechanisms and clinical utility in human medicine, its application in equine practice continues to evolve. As with all modalities, its use is guided by:

  • Clinical reasoning

  • Patient response

  • Integration with established rehabilitation principles

Our focus remains on delivering targeted, outcome-driven care, selecting interventions that complement each horse’s specific needs.

Looking ahead

The addition of H-Wave electrotherapy reflects a continued commitment to advancing clinical practice and expanding therapeutic options available to our equine patients.

If you would like to discuss whether H-Wave therapy may be appropriate for your horse, or to integrate it within an existing rehabilitation programme, please get in touch.
