Elements of a Veterinary Physiotherapy Consultation
*****Pulsed electromagnetic therapy (post 8/10)
Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy (PEMT) delivers time-varying electromagnetic fields to tissues without direct contact, influencing cellular signalling and ion exchange.
Proposed mechanisms include modulation of calcium binding, enhancement of microcirculation and upregulation of osteogenic and soft tissue repair pathways.
In Veterinary Physiotherapy PEMT is most commonly used for soft tissue lesions, chronic inflammatory conditions, bone stress injuries and to optimise fracture healing.
Its clinical appeal lies in its non-invasive application and ability to be used for broad treatment areas and deeper tissues, depending on the applicator used.
Evidence remains variable, largely due to differences in device parameters and study design. As such, clinical reasoning and response monitoring are essential when integrating PEMT into a rehabilitation programme. In our hands however this modality has shown valuable results.
For specific tissue pathology it is best used within a targeted programme rather than a single session application. As such an affordable hire unit is available for short term loan including saddle, poll and leg applicator pads.
