Elements of a Veterinary Physiotherapy Consultation
*****Rehabilitation planning (post 9/10)
Rehabilitation planning is the central framework that determines outcome in Veterinary Physiotherapy. Modalities are secondary to structured progression of loading, adaptation and functional recovery.
A robust plan begins with clear problem definition, distinguishing primary pathology from secondary compensatory dysfunction. From this, specific goals and timelines can be established.
Progression is typically staged:
Acute phase: pain control, inflammation management, protection
Subacute phase: controlled loading, early activation
Reconditioning phase: strength, proprioception, endurance
Return to function: discipline-specific demands and performance exposure
Exercise prescription is the core driver of change. Manual therapy and electrotherapies support capacity, but controlled movement creates adaptation.
Monitoring is essential. Objective markers such as gait quality, symmetry, tolerance to work and recovery response guide progression.
Rehabilitation is dynamic. Plans must be adjusted in response to tissue response, not fixed timelines.
